My Story
Welcome to Allotment Rookie at Plot 51.
I started Allotment Rookie as a complete beginner, learning as I went, making mistakes, asking questions and slowly discovering the joy of growing.
Plot 51 became more than an allotment. It became a place to breathe, notice, and try again and to feel connected to nature. I did not arrive knowing everything, but I felt ready to learn.
At first, there was so much I did not understand. When should I plant? What should I harvest? Why would something disappear overnight? Had I watered too much, planted too close together, or left something too long? I quickly realised that gardening is full of questions, and that is why Allotment Rookie exists.
This is a space for beginners, families, growers, nature lovers and anyone who enjoys the real life of an allotment. The good bits, the messy bits, the funny moments, the unexpected visitors and the little wins all matter here.
Plot 51 is also shared with wildlife. I have introduced a wildlife camera, which has opened up a whole new side of allotment life. It is not just me growing here. The plot is shared with birds, bees, butterflies, frogs, snails, slugs, squirrels, badgers and all the tiny creatures that appear when you slow down and look closely.
Some visitors are easy to spot in the daytime. Others leave clues behind or appear on the wildlife camera when the humans have gone home. It has made me realise that Plot 51 is not just an allotment. It is a small living world, and I am learning how to grow alongside the residents who were already here.
The Plot 51 Young Explorers stories and free activities have grown from this real wildlife. Freddie the Frog, Barry the Snail, Buzz the Bee and the other characters are inspired by the creatures, moments and surprises I find on the plot.
Through my books, planners, free guide cards and Plot 51 Young Explorers stories, I hope to make growing feel less overwhelming and more enjoyable.
This is not perfect gardening. It is real allotment life.
